Jan Fledderus: New Product Manager Swine

In mid-September, Jan Fledderus started as a Product Manager and Consultant in Swine at the S&C team at Schothorst Feed Research. After an absence of 15 years, Jan decided to return to SFR. He had been working as a Swine Researcher at SFR from 1998 up to 2008. During this period, SFR became an independent research institute (2004), which resulted in a large number of companies that had contact with Jan. However, his focus remained on core nutrition for the compound feed industry.

Jan was one of the founders of the Advanced Feed Package, which was introduced to provide the feed industry with fundamental know-how about feed evaluation, the effects of processing technologies on nutritional value and animal performance, raw material information, and nutrient requirements.

Since 2008, Jan has been working as a Swine Nutritionist and Innovation Manager in the compound feed industry. He started at Nutreco (Hendrix) and continued in the Nutrition & Innovation Centre department of ForFarmers following the acquisition of Hendrix by ForFarmers in 2012. Since both Nutreco and ForFarmers are large companies with multinational businesses, he has been involved in numerous international projects and feed developments. As an Innovation Manager, Jan has always been involved in research projects in swine nutrition, with the responsibility to implement results from feed trials in diet formulations or feed matrices. He has a strong focus on continuously improving the price/quality ratio of the diets for a competitive pig sector. Training nutritionists and/or salespeople about new developments in swine nutrition has always been part of the job and is essential for a successful position in the feed industry.

His background in both swine research with applied nutrition and diet formulation was the reason Jan participated in several committees and research projects in collaboration with institutes such as Wageningen University, CVB, Nevedi, VDN, GFLI, and, of course, SFR. His main professional goal is to further develop the Advanced Feed Package and to assist SFR’s customers with the implementation of new developments in feed evaluation and nutrient requirements in pigs. Jan is experienced in this field of nutrition, with examples of the introduction of energy systems for gestating and lactating sows, and the effects of soybean meal replacement on the composition of pig diets and the impact on environmental parameters.
